Cancer Research – Lipoic Acid

Lipic Acid Study – Lipoic acid is found inside every cell of the body, where it helps to regenerate the energy that keeps cells alive and functioning. Our study demonstrated that lipoic acid may be considered for treatment of leukemia.

Treatment of leukemia cells by lipoic acid resulted in inhibition of metabolic activity and ATP level in trans-formed cells and induced apoptosis in these cells without affecting healthy T cells.

When leukemia cells were differentiated (from cancer to normal cells), lipoic acid showed less inhibition on them. Leukemia cells (HL-60) can be differentiated by phorbol-13-acetate into mature granulocytes.

After differentiation, the morphology of cells were changed and the cell growth rate were lowered.

After differentiation, previous leukemia cells showed less bioenergetics (less mitochondrial mass, less energy production).

Lipoic acid had different effect on the level of metabolic activity of transformed and differentiated cells. Supplementation by lipoic acid caused inhibition of meta-bolic activity of tumor cells.
